London 1989

Painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) as photographed at age eighty outside his London studio. Neil Libbert took the black-and-white picture in 1989. Bacon appears to have been caught unexpectedly but does not seem perturbed or startled. The original print was cropped for reproduction in Francis Bacon : Five Decades, a new book based on the recent show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. That exhibition was staged to mark the twentieth anniversary of the artist's death.
