Fetti


For the New Year there is a new desktop background (above) on the large old monitor at Spencer Alley where this rolling screen comes into being every day. Domenico Fetti painted his high-baroque vision of Hero and Leander's love tragedy in the early 1620s. The central episode imagines Hero and her lades retrieving the drowned body of Leander from the ocean.

Domenico Fetti was born in Rome in 1589 and died in Venice at the early age of 35. His mature career lasted only about ten years, yet produced the numerous wonders below.
