Muses

Thalia, Muse of Comedy

In 1620 Giovanni Baglione made a series of paintings called Apollo and the Muses. Several of those muses are here.

Terpsichore, Muse of Dance

Urania, Muse of Astronomy

Clio, Muse of History

Calliope, Muse of Epic Poetry

Erato, Muse of Lyric Poetry

Euterpe, Muse of Music

Baglione painted human bodies as if they were soft toys filled with stuffing. He is remembered today mainly as the cantankerous rival of Caravaggio in the Roman art world of the early 17th century. Baglione wrote the first biography of Caravaggio, and it was not friendly. Better painters by the dozens  by the hundreds  have dropped out of cultural memory altogether, but Giovanni Baglione is remembered.
