Bodegónes

Juan van der Hamen

The genre of "pantry still life" or "bodegón" first became elaborated and fashionable in 17th-century Spain. The most severe strain of the tradition, seen here, restricted each composition to a featureless dark background with front-facing dispositions of  fruit, vegetables, flowers, birds, animals, fish and cookware.
