From Life is written or printed beneath many of Julia Margaret Cameron's photographic prints at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Her handwritten caption-credits mimicked etchings or engravings where attributions were traditionally written along the bottom edge of the plate, with the name of the inventor of the original image on the left, and the name of the working engraver on the right. Mrs. Cameron seems to have conceived her photographic enterprise like a printmaking process  where the original artist (credited at bottom left) was Life. Each photograph was one authentic, reproduced portion of what Life created and offered to the vigilant camera technician, whose task it was to preserve this creation exactly as it occurred in the whizzing moment.
