Many of the preparatory drawings for the frescoes created by Annibale Carracci in the second half of the 1590s for Palazzo Farnese in Rome have been preserved as a group since the days of their origin as studio documents. Curators at the Royal Collection trace their provenance back to Domenichino, Annibale's most prominent pupil, who inherited many of the master's papers. The line of descent reads as follows – "Domenichino (d. 1641) by whom bequeathed to Francesco Raspantino, by whom sold to Carlo Maratti, by whom sold to Pope Clement XI (1703), by whom bequeathed to Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1721), from whom bought by George III (1762)." Cardinal Albani reportedly parted with his extraordinary art collection (which at this point also included the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo, in hundreds of albums, unidentified and forgotten) in order to finance a dowry for his natural daughter.
