The four Italian artists grouped here  Perino del Vaga, Parmigianino, Girolamo da Carpi, Alessandro Allori  all earned substantial incomes during the middle decades of the 16th century from designing painted decorations  often with stylized human figures  to extend and enhance the three-dimensional architectural ornamentation already existing on church and palace walls and ceilings.
