"The affetti, or emotions, meant to Poussin and to the seventeenth century in general the outward manifestations, in movement or gesture, of inward reactions, either psychic or physical.  Through systematizing the affetti, Poussin delineated certain clear, unmixed emotions, associating with each emotion a distinguishing attitude.  To create his vocabulary of gestures, Poussin followed in general the dictates of Roman rhetorical writers (Cicero, and especially Quintilian, who describes appropriate oratorical gestures in detail).  Poussin also illustrated, and therefore must have known well, Leonardo's Trattato della Pittura (first published in French and Italian, 1651) which contains Leonardo's naturalistic observation that an inward emotion must be depicted by its outward physical effect."
