Additional sheets from the 1585 portfolio of engravings by Adamo Scultori based on border-figures from Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling.  Reproductions are by courtesy of Teylers Museum in Haarlem.

"There is no direct evidence that Michelangelo encouraged the reproduction of his work in prints, but at the same time, there is little evidence that he would have prevented others from publishing in this way.  There are hints in his biographies that he disliked populist art, and he might have recoiled from distributing copies of his work because of the taint of commercialism and self-promotion that reproductive printmaking had already acquired.  What can be said with some certainty is that Michelangelo himself did not actively collaborate with printmakers in the way that Raphael did with Marcantonio Raimondi.  This lack of involvement in the process is sometimes seen as the primary reason why important works like the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes [completed in 1512] were slow to be reproduced."
